What is Genre?

Genre

Genre is a way of categorising a film based on it’s components.

 

Genre is by institutions to help them identify their audience and market the film.


 

A Sub-genre is a category within a category, it can aid audiences when searching for a specific type of film.

 

A Hybrid-genre is a combination to two or more main genres, this can be more unpredictable which changes audience expectations.

 

Genre can be associated with Film, Music, TV, Books, and Newspapers. It refers to the selection and choice people have in day-to-day life. Everything in our life contains a specific genre even non media products such as food can be categorised in different ways. In order for for a film to correspond to a specific genre it must conform to specific rules or as they are formally know as, Conventions.
