Walt Disney - Film Industry Research

Walt Disney

Disney is an international conglomerate which is still standing strong, ninety years after the creation of Mickey mouse. The company originated on the 16th October 1923 and began with Walt Disney and his brother produce a mini series of animated films called ‘Alice Comedies’ – Alice in Wonderland then stemmed from this idea.

The CEO of Disney is Robert Iger who is also one of the largest shareholders of the company. Previously he has served as the president of ABC Television from 1994-1995, this could have helped Disney cross over onto ABC
Television as costs would be lower due to Roberts prior commitments.

The Disney company has been running for over 90 years, over these nine decades Disney has produced some Films that have been incredibly successful, their top 5 highest grossing films are: The Avengers ($1.5 bil), The Lion King ($1.7 bil), Avengers Infinity War ($2.0 bil), Star Wars The Force Awakens ($2.0 bil) and Avengers Endgame ($2.7 bil). However some of these films had super-sized budgets such as Infinity War – $316 mil, The Force Awakens - $306 mil and Endgame – 356 mil!

Disney often works with actors who play a character within a large franchise such as Scareltt Johansson who plays Natasha Romanoff in the Marvel universe films who has been repeatedly brought back for films within the franchise.

Currently Disney has 13 films in pre-production and 59 films in production. They are able to produce such a vast number of films and once due to their huge scale as an institution, the advantage of being so large is that they don’t have large costs for rights, they can never become bankrupt due to receiving income from many sources such as merchandise, Television, Theme Parks etc. and they can put content from every company they own onto their streaming service Disney plus which has nearly 95 million subscribers.
